Venus is a stunning, highly-coveted variety that brings a soft, ethereal palette to the garden and vase. It was introduced in 2016 by the Canadian hybridizer Au Beau Pré.

Characteristics:

Form:

  • Collarette or Open Center (CO/NO): 'Venus' is primarily classified as an Open Center (NO) or Collarette (CO) form dahlia. This classification means the center of the bloom is not fully double, displaying a central disc surrounded by a ring of ray florets. Specifically, the Collarette form features an inner ring of smaller, petal-like florets (the "collarette") that are a different colour or texture from the main ray petals.
  • Novelty (NX): Some growers also categorize it as a Novelty Open Center (NO) form, acknowledging its unique colour blend and delicate appearance that sets it apart from standard open-center types.

Colour:

Light Shade Blend (LB) or Bronze/Orange: 'Venus' is celebrated for its highly desirable, unique colour blend often described as a pastel peach with varying hints of pink, apricot, and soft salmon.

  • Main Petals: Creamy peach and apricot with pink and salmon highlights, creating a gentle, watercolor-like gradation of hues.
  • Central Disc: A cheerful, bright sunny yellow disc, which invites pollinators. The petals surrounding the center often shift to a deeper shade of soft orange or bronze.

Bloom size: (Small to Medium (BB/A)

  • Diameter: Blooms typically measure 4 to 5 inches ( cm to cm) across.
  • According to the American Dahlia Society (ADS) classification, blooms inches to inches ( cm to cm) are categorized as Small (BB), and 'Venus' fits perfectly into this range. Some sources list blooms at inches, placing it towards the larger end of the Small category.

Plant Height

  • Medium-to-Tall: The plant grows to a substantial height, generally reaching 4 to 4.5 feet ( m to m) tall, making it a prominent feature in the garden.

Performance:

  • Pollinator Magnet: The open center structure makes the sunny yellow disc readily accessible, ensuring the bloom is a favorite of bees and other pollinators.
  • Good Tuber Producer: This variety is noted by some growers as being very generous with tubers and producing clumps that are easy to split for propagation.
  • Vase Life Note: Like many open-centered dahlias, 'Venus' may have a slightly shorter vase life than fully double varieties. For the longest enjoyment in a bouquet, it's recommended to cut the blooms just as they open, before the central disc florets have fully matured and been visited by bees.
