Veca Lucia dahlia is a dazzling, multi-tonal variety, prized for its unique, painterly colors and contrasting picotee edge. It was hybridized by Lou Paradise and introduced in 1997.
Characteristics:
Form: Veca Lucia' is consistently classified as an Informal Decorative dahlia. This form is characterized by fully double blooms where the ray florets (petals) are often long, twisted, or slightly rolled, with an irregular arrangement that gives the flower a "frilly" or less formal appearance. The petals often curve slightly toward the stem.
Colour: Light Blend (LB) and Picotee: 'Veca Lucia' is classified as a Light Blend (LB), but it is the vibrant combination of colors and the unique picotee edging that makes it extraordinary.
- Primary Color: The petals display a soft, swirly blend of lavender-pink, cream, and magenta.
- Picotee Edge: The most notable feature is a contrasting, deep magenta or plum "picotee" edge (a narrow band of color) on the tips of the petals.
- Center Glow: Some growers also note a creamy yellow center that can create a glowing effect as the bloom unfurls.
Bloom Size: Medium (B)
- Diameter: The blooms typically measure 6 to 8 inches (15 cm to 20 cm) across.
- According to the American Dahlia Society (ADS) classification, blooms of this diameter are categorized as Medium (B), making this a substantial, attention-grabbing flower.
Plant Height
- Tall: The plant is known for its tall, full stature, generally growing to a height of 4 to 4.5 feet (1.2 m to 1.4 m) tall.
Performance
- Showy and Eye-Catching: The unusual combination of soft and deep colors, highlighted by the striking magenta picotee edge, ensures that 'Veca Lucia' is an absolute standout both in the garden and in floral arrangements.
- Strong Stems: It produces blooms on tall, strong stems, which is a desirable trait for a cutting variety, making it easy to harvest and arrange.
- Excellent Cut Flower: It is a highly valued flower for cutting gardens, as its large size and unique color pattern add significant drama and interest to large bouquets and design work.
