Vassio Meggos is a sport (a natural mutation) of the deep red 'Spartacus' dahlia, retaining its excellent size and form but showing off a completely new color palette. It was introduced in 2005 by U.S. hybridizer Steve Meggos.
Characteristics:
Form: Informal Decorative (ID)
- Vassio Meggos is classified as an Informal Decorative dahlia (ADS Classification: 1108). This means its fully double blooms feature ray florets (petals) that are broad, often slightly ruffled, rolled, or twisted, with an irregular arrangement that gives the flower a "full," plush, and somewhat wild look.
- Dinnerplate: Due to its immense size, it's widely sold and referred to as a Dinnerplate Dahlia.
Colour:
- Lavender (L): The dahlia is officially classified as a Lavender (L) color.
- Color Blend: In reality, the petals display a rich blend of rosy lavender, amethyst, and soft pink, with many sources also noting subtle highlights or brushstrokes of crisp white scattered throughout the petals, which adds depth and texture. The color often takes on a beautiful, pale plum hue.
Bloom Size: Large (A)
- Diameter: Blooms are impressively large, consistently reaching 8 to 10 inches (20 cm to 25 cm) in diameter.
- According to the American Dahlia Society (ADS) classification, blooms in this range are categorized as Large (A).
Plant Height:
- Tall: This is a statuesque plant, typically reaching a height of 4 to 5 feet (1.2 m to 1.5 m) tall, requiring staking to support its massive blooms.
Performance:
- Show Winner: 'Vassio Meggos' has a history of winning awards, including the prestigious Darrill W. Hart Award, and has consistently ranked high on the ADS's "Fabulous 50" list since its introduction.
- Excellent Focal Point: Its enormous size and dramatic, layered color make it an exceptional focal point in garden borders or as a stand-alone specimen in a large container.
- Strong Stems for Cutting: The plant produces strong, upright stems that effectively support the heavy dinnerplate-sized blooms, making them ideal for high-impact floral arrangements.
- Prolific Bloomer: It's known to be a prolific bloomer, continuously producing its stunning flowers from mid-summer until the first frost.
