The Van Isle Blood dahlia is a powerful and dramatic variety within the Van Isle series, developed by hybridizer Trevor Hoff (Cable Bay Dahlias). Known for its intense, moody coloring and classic structure, it’s a top choice for adding depth to garden beds and sophisticated floral arrangements.
- Color: Dark Red (DR). A deep, velvety oxblood red that remains rich and saturated from the center to the petal tips. The dark hue has a luxurious, almost blackened quality in certain lighting, making it a dramatic focal point.
- Form: Semi-Cactus (SC). Features broad petals at the base that become pointed and revolute (curled back) for at least half their length, giving the bloom a spiky yet full appearance. ADS Classification: SC (Dark Red).
- Bloom Size: Medium to Large (B/A). An impressive producer of substantial blooms, typically measuring 7 to 8 inches (18–20 cm) in diameter.
- Height: Tall. Reaches approximately 4 to 5 feet (120–150 cm) in height. Given its large blooms and tall stature, it requires sturdy staking to support its heavy-headed beauty.
- Performance: High-Impact Show Stopper. While it is a reliable producer of long, strong stems, its primary appeal lies in its "wow factor." It is frequently used for exhibition and as a primary focal flower in late-summer bouquets.
