The Penhill Dark Monarch dahlia is a magnificent and moody "dinnerplate" variety introduced by Walter H. Maritz of South Africa in 2003. It is celebrated for its enormous, ruffled blooms and a complex, blending color palette—making it a dramatic focal point in any garden or late-summer bouquet.
- Color: Purple (PR) / Dark Pink. A mesmerizing ombré of smoky plum, raspberry, and deep pink, often accented with soft peach, coral, or buttermilk undertones at the base of the petals.
- Form: Informal Decorative (ID). Features expansive, slightly twisted, and ruffled petals that create a voluminous, "shaggy" appearance. ADS Classification: 0109 (AA ID PR)
- Bloom Size: Giant (AA). Massive flowers that typically reach 8 to 10 inches (20–25 cm) or more in diameter.
- Height: Tall. A vigorous grower that reaches approximately 4 to 5 feet (120–150 cm) tall. Due to the weight of its giant blooms, it requires sturdy staking.
- Performance: Show-Stopping Focal Point. Praised for producing a steady supply of larger-than-life blooms on long, strong stems from mid-summer until the first frost. It is a reliable performer that offers exceptional visual impact for both garden borders and exhibition.
