Molly Raven is a distinctive and highly sought-after dahlia, particularly by floral designers, for its moody, complex color palette and unique bi-color/streaked appearance. It was bred by the renowned gardener Sarah Raven and named for her daughter.
Characteristics:
Form: Decorative (D) / Informal Decorative (ID)—Most commonly classified as a Decorative dahlia. The blooms are fully double with a high petal count. Sources are split between Formal Decorative and Informal Decorative, but the broad, slightly undulating petals generally lean toward Informal Decorative.
Color: Bi-color (BI) / Pink Blend (PB) / Dark Pink (DP)—The color is its most defining trait, a complex blend that is difficult to categorize:
- Base Color: A muted, dusty, ethereal base of soft coffee, pale yellowish-pink, or dusty rose.
- Overlay/Streaks: The base is heavily streaked and brushed with darker tones of fuchsia, raspberry, dark magenta, or plum, giving the bloom a moody, striped appearance.
- Accents: Often features a deep raspberry or mauve heart, and the stems and foliage are conspicuously dark/purplish, providing a striking contrast to the bloom.
Bloom Size: Small (BB)—Blooms are typically sized between 4 and 5 inches (10–12.5 cm) in diameter.
Height: Medium to Tall, generally growing between 3 and 4 feet (90–120 cm).
Performance: Highly valued as a cut flower due to its unique color, strong, dark stems, and exceptional garden contrast provided by its dark foliage. It is known to be a vigorous grower and prolific bloomer. The dahlia was awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit (AGM) in the UK.
