The Mingus Plum dahlia is an early-blooming and exceptionally generous variety introduced by hybridizer Phillip Mingus. A sport of the popular 'Mingus Toni', it is admired for its velvety texture and "untiring" garden display, making it a reliable favorite for those seeking deep, dramatic tones in their late-summer landscape.
- Color: Dark Red / Purple. Features thick, velvety petals in a deep red-purple hue reminiscent of juicy red plum flesh. The center of the bloom often carries a darker sheen that glimmers in the sunlight.
- Form: Informal Decorative (ID). Boasts full, double blooms with slightly wavy or irregular petals that create a lush, textured appearance. ADS Classification: 3110 (Small Informal Decorative Dark Red) or similar.
- Bloom Size: Small to Medium (BB/B). Blooms typically range from 4 to 6 inches (10–15 cm) in diameter, though some sources report them reaching up to 8 inches in ideal conditions.
- Height: Medium to Tall. Typically grows to approximately 4 feet (120 cm) tall, requiring support to manage its high volume of flowers.
- Performance: Early and Prolific Bloomer. Known as one of the earliest blooming dahlias, it provides an abundance of flowers that hold up well as cut flowers. It is praised for its resilience and ability to maintain a stunning display even after rain.
