The Maki dahlia is a breathtaking and high-impact variety introduced Gingaen of Japan in 1980. A "sport" of the legendary Emory Paul, it is celebrated for its "gigantic," show-stopping blooms and vibrant, eye-catching color—making it a premier choice for gardeners who want to grow some of the largest dahlias on the planet.

  • Color: Pink (PK) / Purple Splashed. A bright, saturated pink that is often vividly streaked or splashed with random purple or dark pink markings. This variety can be unstable, occasionally producing blooms that are solid pink or solid purple throughout the season
  • Form: Informal Decorative (ID) / Semi-Cactus. Features long, elegant petals that often have a unique "flared" or "feathery" appearance at the tips, creating a lush and airy silhouette. ADS Classification: 1109 (Informal Decorative / ID).
  • Bloom Size: Giant (AA) / Large (A). Truly a "dinner plate" dahlia, its massive blooms typically measure between 10 to 14 inches (25–35 cm) in diameter, with some dedicated growers reporting record-breaking flowers up to 15 inches.
  • Height: Medium to Tall. A robust and stately grower that reaches approximately 3.5 to 4.5 feet (105–135 cm) tall, requiring heavy-duty staking to support the sheer weight of its enormous flowers.
  • Performance: Late-Season Specialist. Known for being "mega-slow" to start, it is often a late bloomer that rewards patient gardeners with some of the most astounding flowers of the year right before the first frost. While it produces fewer blooms than smaller varieties, it is highly prized for its "wow-factor" and is a reliable tuber producer.
