Karma Choc Dahlia as hybridized by Verwer (NL) and introduced around 2006 (some sources say 2007). It is a highly sought-after member of the 'Karma' series, bred for its extraordinary color and excellent performance as a cut flower.
Characteristics:
Form: Waterlily (WL) or Decorative (D). It features a fully double bloom with broad, velvety petals arranged in the classic shallow, waterlily-like shape.
Color: A deep, dramatic Dark Red (DR), often described as chocolate-brown, deep velvety red, or deep burgundy. The centers of the flowers are often so dark they appear nearly black, giving the bloom an intense, moody richness.
Bloom Size: BB to A (Small to Medium), with blooms typically measuring 4 to 6 inches (10–15 cm) in diameter.
Height: A sturdy, compact plant growing between 3 to 4 feet (90–120 cm).
Foliage: The plant features strikingly dark, almost black or deep burgundy stems and foliage, which perfectly complements the deep color of the blooms.
Fragrance: Many growers note a faint, sweet scent of chocolate in the blooms, a rare and delightful characteristic for a dahlia.
Performance:
- Part of the Karma Series, bred for exceptional vase life and garden performance. This dahlia is an award-winning, reliable, and highly productive bloomer, flowering from mid-summer until the first frost.
- The sturdy, straight stalks hold the dramatic blooms upright, making it one of the best varieties for cutting.
- It offers an exceptionally long vase life (with some sources suggesting an average of 5+ days after proper post-harvest care) and is a favorite among floral designers for adding depth and drama to arrangements.
