Irish Speckles was introduced by hybridizers Steve and Sandy Boley in 2007. Irish Speckles has become a beloved gem in the Legacy Dahlia Collection.
Characteristics:
Form: Pompon (P). The blooms are perfectly spherical and tightly packed with small, involute (inward-curving) petals, giving them a tidy, ball-like shape.
Color: Variegated (V). This variety exhibits a playful pattern of colors that shifts throughout the season:
- The base color is typically a soft lavender, mauve, or cream.
- This base is adorned with mid-purple or dark pink flecks, stripes, and speckles. This variegation is what gives the dahlia its namesake "speckles" and a truly unique, hand-painted look.
- Seasonal Note: It often starts with more pink tones and fades to a more muted, soft lavender as the season progresses.
Bloom Size: Pompon size, meaning it's quite small—generally 1.5 to 2 inches (3 to 5 cm) in diameter.
Height: A medium, bushy plant, growing to about 30–36 inches (75–90 cm) tall.
Performance:
- Cut Flower Quality: Highly valued by florists for its small size and round shape, which helps fill out arrangements and add a focal point of texture, similar to a button chrysanthemum. It is very productive on strong stems.
- Garden Use: Its neat habit makes it suitable for garden borders or containers. The unusual variegated color holds up well next to both soft pastels (like 'Joel's Favorite') and dramatic dark flowers (like 'José Maria').
- Productivity: Known to be a very floriferous variety, producing an abundance of blooms throughout the season until frost.
