Ice Tea Dahlia was introduced in 2013 by Swan Island Dahlias (USA), with Gitts noted as the hybridizer.
Characteristics:
Form: Formal Decorative (FD). This variety presents a neat, highly symmetrical bloom with uniformly flat, slightly recurved petals. It is sometimes classified as a Miniature or Small Decorative type.
Color: Orange / Bronze (OR/BR). The color is complex and highly sought after, resembling a true glass of iced tea.
- The base color is a rich, warm amber-orange, peach, or soft coral.
- This is often overlaid or blended with bronze, raspberry, or warm pink/brown hues, especially toward the tips and edges of the petals.
- The color intensity can shift depending on the growing season and heat, making it a dynamic and beautiful addition.
Bloom Size: Miniature (M) / Small, typically ranging from 3 to 4 inches (7.5 to 10 cm) in diameter.
Height: A robust, compact plant that generally grows to 3 to 3.5 feet (90–105 cm) tall, though some reports suggest up to 4 feet.
Performance:
- Cut Flower Quality: 'Ice Tea' is a champion cut flower and a favorite among flower farmers. It is noted for being incredibly prolific (a non-stop producer) on long, sturdy stems that hold the bloom upright without bending. Its smaller size and unique color make it an excellent filler for bouquets.
- Vase Life: Has an excellent, respectable vase life of around 5 days (which is average to good for a dahlia) with proper harvesting and care, and is considered a very reliable variety.
- Garden Use: Its compact yet vigorous habit makes it ideal for borders or as a key producer in a cutting garden. It is highly valued for its warm, versatile tones, which pair beautifully with pink, coral, yellow, and deep red color combinations.
