Hy Patti was introduced in 2006 by Wayne Holland (W Holland) in Canada.

Characteristics:

Form: Formal Decorative (FD). This variety features medium-sized blooms with perfectly formed, uniform petals that are slightly involute (curving inward) or cupped, giving the flower a neat, elegant, and somewhat globe-like appearance.

Color: Orange / Bronze / Pink Blend (OR/BR/PK). The color is highly complex and variable, making it incredibly popular.

  • It is often described as a rich, coppery-orange, apricot, or terracotta-brown.
  • The petals carry subtle pink, raspberry, or bronze undertones, which deepen as the season progresses or in cooler weather, lending it a gorgeous, smoky, ombre effect.
  • The variation and warmth of the color make it a perfect "transition" bloom between summer and autumn palettes.

Bloom Size: Medium (B) or Small/Medium (BB), typically ranging from 5 to 8 inches (12.5 to 20 cm) in diameter.

Height: A tall, vigorous plant that generally grows to 3.5 to 5 feet (105–150 cm) tall.

Performance:

  • Cut Flower Quality: 'HY Patti' is highly regarded as one of the best orange-toned cut flowers available. It is an extremely productive variety, producing a steady abundance of blooms throughout the season on long, strong, and sturdy stems that are ideal for cutting. Its elegant form and sophisticated color make it a magnificent focal flower in high-end arrangements.
  • Vase Life: Has a respectable vase life of around 5 days with proper harvesting and stem care, which is typical for double dahlias of this size and is considered good for this class of bloom.
  • Garden Use: A reliable and vigorous grower that is a must-have for the cutting garden. Its height and continuous production make it a standout in the back border, and its rich, coppery tone pairs beautifully with other moody, autumnal colors like deep reds, browns, and blush pinks.
