The Hollyhill Black Beauty dahlia is a rich and dramatic variety introduced by Ted and Margaret Kennedy in 2012. Highly valued for its "moody" appearance, it is a 2021 Stanley Johnson Medal recipient and a favorite for professional florists seeking deep, velvety tones for wedding and event work.

  • Color: Dark Red (DR). Sumptuous, velvety blooms in a deep burgundy-black or "blood red" hue. While officially classified as dark red, the color is so saturated it often appears nearly black, especially at the center.
  • Form: Informal Decorative (ID). Features wavy, slightly irregular petals that give the bloom a textured, "shaggy" appearance. ADS Classification: 3107 (BB-ID-DR).
  • Bloom Size: Small (BB). Flowers typically measure between 4 to 6 inches (10–15 cm) in diameter.
  • Height: Tall. A vigorous and statuesque grower that reliably reaches between 4.5 to 5 feet (135–150 cm) in height.
  • Performance: Show-Quality Cut Flower. Praised for its long, exceptionally strong stems and high volume of blooms throughout the season. It is noted for its resilience and ability to provide a striking dark contrast in arrangements, though it is sometimes described as a stingy tuber producer.
