Formby Monarch is a highly desirable and exceptionally beautiful dahlia, celebrated for its complex, dusty coloring and magnificent bloom size. Like its counterpart 'Formby Duke,' it was bred by the late George Harding in Tasmania, Australia, and is a premier choice for florists who specialize in muted, antique color schemes. It was introduced in mid-1980s.
Characteristics:
Form: Large Decorative (LD) / Informal Decorative (ID) — The blooms are lush and full. While often classified as Large Decorative, the broad, sometimes slightly waved petals can lean toward Informal Decorative, giving it a flamboyant, regal presence.
Colour: Dusty Pink Blend (PB) / Salmon-Pink — The color is famously complex and highly valued for its "smoky" appearance: Dusty Pink Blend (PB) / Salmon-Pink — The color is famously complex and highly valued for its "smoky" appearance:
- Main Hue: A sophisticated, dusty, antique rose-pink or soft watermelon-pink.
- Accents: It often features a darker, more purple/rose center that gradually fades outward. Most notably, the tips of the petals are often finished with a beautiful, subtle gold or peach shimmer, giving the large bloom a jewel-like quality.
Bloom Size: Large (A) / Dinnerplate — Blooms are substantial, typically ranging from 8 to 9 inches (20–23 cm) in diameter, earning it "Dinnerplate" status.
Height: Tall, typically growing around 4 to 5 feet (120–150 cm).
Performance:Â A premium cut flower known for its unique color, strong stems (though staking is required to support the massive heads), and excellent consistency. It is a champion-winning exhibition dahlia in Australia and a must-have for market growers seeking high-impact, refined blooms.
