Formby Duke is a magnificent and highly coveted dahlia, distinguished by its massive size and uniquely refined, moody color palette. Bred in Tasmania, Australia by the late George Harding, it is a showstopper in the garden and a highly sought-after focal point in luxury floral designs.

Characteristics:

Form: Decorative (D) / Large Decorative (LD) — The blooms are fully double with a high petal count. While commonly listed as a Decorative, its size often places it firmly in the Large Decorative or sometimes even Informal Decorative class. The petals are broad and lush, creating an immense, voluminous flower.

Colour: Pink Blend (PB) / Dusty Pink / Antique — The color is the most famous trait, a complex, smoky hue that elevates pink into a sophisticated neutral:

  • Main Hue: A dusty, muted, antique rose-pink or smoky nude.
  • Undertones: It possesses unique cinnamon, coffee, or bronze undertones that deepen as the season progresses, shifting from a clear, warm pink to a much moodier, refined shade in late summer/fall. This complexity is what makes it a bridal favorite.

Bloom Size: Giant (AA) / Dinnerplate — Blooms are exceptionally large, generally ranging between 8 and 10 inches (20–25 cm) in diameter, truly qualifying it as a "Dinnerplate" variety.

Height: Tall, typically growing between 4 and 5 feet (120–150 cm). Due to its size, it often requires support/staking to hold up the heavy blooms.

Performance: A premium cut flower despite its size. It is valued for its reliable form and color consistency. While any Giant variety requires careful tending, 'Formby Duke' is known to produce its striking, huge blooms on strong stems, making it worth the extra garden effort.
