The Fidalgo Knight dahlia is a moody and historic variety hybridized approximately 40 years ago by Richard Matthies on Fidalgo Island, Washington. It is prized by collectors and exhibitors for its rich, "blackest" appearance and sturdy stems, making it a dramatic addition to cut flower arrangements and a reliable winner on the show bench.

  • Color: Dark Red / Burgundy. A deep, velvety maroon that often leans toward a chocolate or "black" tone, especially in the center of the bloom.
  • Form: Formal Decorative (FD). Features broad petals that are neatly and symmetrically arranged. ADS Classification: 3009.
  • Bloom Size: Small (BB). Blooms typically range from 4 to 6 inches (10–15 cm) in diameter.
  • Height: Medium. A strong, upright grower that reaches between 3 to 4 feet (90–120 cm) tall.
  • Performance: Prolific Cut Flower. Known for being very productive and "chugging out" large numbers of blooms on long, strong stems.
