The Ferncliff Thunder dahlia is a moody and "color-shifting" variety hybridized by David Jack of Ferncliff Gardens in British Columbia, Canada. It is a favorite among floral designers for its iridescent, smoky glow and its ability to add depth to "shabby chic" or romantic garden palettes.
- Color: Dark Blend (DB) / Smoky Purple. Features a creamy-yellow base "dipped" in shades of smoky lavender, amethyst, and rosy-pink. The petals often display a dark purple outline and a metallic, iridescent quality that shifts in the light.
- Form: Formal Decorative (FD). A neatly arranged, symmetrical bloom with broad petals that reflex slightly towards the stem. ADS Classification: 4013.
- Bloom Size: Miniature (M). Perfectly scaled blooms typically measure 3 to 4 inches (7.5–10 cm) in diameter.
- Height: Medium to Tall. Typically reaches 3.5 to 4.5 feet (105–135 cm) tall.
- Performance: Prolific "Workhorse" Cut Flower. Renowned for its exceptional productivity, "pumping out" flowers on long, dark, and sturdy stems from midsummer until frost. It is noted for an excellent vase life of approximately 5–6 days
