The April Heather dahlia is a whimsical and award-winning "Collerette" variety introduced by Australian hybridizer R.W. (Bob) Lodge in 1991. It is a garden favorite for its unique, multi-layered appearance and its ability to attract pollinators like bees and butterflies.
- Color: Yellow / Red-Orange Blend (YL/OR). A cheerful combination featuring soft primrose-yellow outer petals that contrast beautifully with a central "collar" of shorter, ruffled ivory or pale yellow petaloids, often tipped with a bright reddish-orange or scarlet.
- Form: Collerette (CO). A single row of flat outer petals surrounding a shorter inner ring of "frizzle" petals (the collar) and an open central disc. ADS Classification: 9015
- Bloom Size: Miniature (M). These dainty, open-faced blooms typically measure around 3 to 4 inches (7.5–10 cm) in diameter.
- Height: Low to Medium. A more compact grower, usually reaching 3 to 3.5 feet (90–105 cm) tall, making it an excellent choice for the front of a garden border or large containers.
- Performance: Pollinator Magnet and Prolific Bloomer. Renowned for being exceptionally productive, it covers itself in blooms from midsummer until frost. Because the centers are open, it is one of the best dahlia varieties for supporting garden biodiversity while providing charming, airy material for mixed bouquets.
