Makayla’s Meadow
Makayla’s MeadowWelcome
Thank you for choosing Makayla’s Meadow!About the gardener
I am a backyard grower in Victoria, BC.
I always had a fascination for nature and a love for growing
things. I consider myself as a student of life…for me, learning
never stops—from maintaining soil health, composting,
germinating seeds, protecting the bees, saving the butterflies,
being sustainable, to choosing native plants.
My interest in growing flowers started when my daughter was
born. She is now four years old.
I am a newbie to the world of flowers but am learning a lot.
I have observed, researched and listened.
I have tried, made mistakes and failed.
But I have had successes. And here I am, with about 300 cultivars of dahlias
I can't wait to share my extras with you.
I do not have a row of one variety, but a plant or two of one variety.
DahliasI have limited space in an urban area.
I have planted, dug and divided each tuber.
I have chased unicorns.
It would give me the greatest pleasure to spread love and
happiness through dahlias.
I would like to eliminate barriers and have as many
unicorns as I can share.
It is my hope is that every garden will have them.
My passion begins in the soil
—where I place a seed, a tuber, a corm, or a bulb
—and continues in the quiet joy of nurturing it into bloom.
Each plant is a gift - of beauty and colour or nourishment.
Lately, my path has led me deeper into the realm of flowers.
At first, the idea felt overwhelming. I’ve never considered myself
artful. But I’ve come to believe that artistry isn’t a fixed trait—it’s a
practice. And with each day, I grow a little more into it.I have listened and researched about bacterial gall that affects
dahlias, including mosaic viruses, root nematodes, etc.
As gardeners, we are aware that bacteria, viruses, fungal infection,
pests, etc. can damage our beloved plants at any time.
Here are the things I do to avoid disease in my stock:
I start with my source - I choose Canadian suppliers and support
small backyard growers like myself because I believe, that like me,
they are hands-on and passionate about their gardens.
Tools are sanitized between contact with plants. I culled plants that
showed signs of diseases. I also eliminated from the selling
inventory any plants that did not grow robustly during the season.

My garden is pollinator friendly. Note that there is inherent risk
of disease being spread by bees and butterflies.
